AI bringing Paradigm Shift and Transformation in Project Management

The project management practices have been continuously evolving to harmonize with the advancement in technology space. As per Gartner, "80% of today’s project management tasks will be eliminated by 2030 as Artificial Intelligence takes on traditional PM functions such as data collection, tracking, reporting etc." The traditional project management practices and the role of project managers are required to be transformed. Further, AI is going to revolutionize how program and portfolio management (PPM) leaders leverage technology to support their business goals. Hence, it becomes imperative to understand the implications of AI and new ways of working for delivering the projects with speed to outcome. AI is enabling project managers to take smart decisions and uncover new insights, automate repetitive tasks, and understand key project performance parameters.

Application of Machine Learning to Scheduling in Construction Projects

Construction project professionals are turning to Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve productivity, but also to address the unknowns and uncertainties hardly anticipated by average human performance. Current research has found that construction-related activities bring in over $10 trillion in annum, a figure expected to grow by 4.2% through 2023. In this way, AI is helping how to grow the project profession, which is especially evident in the construction industry where schedules have a higher complexity. Furthermore, AI in construction project management is especially evident in applying the so-called technical activities such as scheduling, risk management, cost calculation, etc. This lecture focuses only on applying AI to scheduling in construction projects during the construction phase and will show one practical example of machine learning on one football stadium building project. It will elaborate on how to apply AI to solve the following issues: Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), spatial project organization (zones organization), the spatial distribution of works, work sequencing organization, and construction technology. Finally, the study will demonstrate how to integrate the AI achievements in the one federative and integral BIM model and show how the AI-designed schedule fits into the 5D BIM model. Even though the solutions explained are novel, the initial results show a 20 times faster initial scheduling process, 25% increase in productivity of construction, and 4 times faster change and requirement management.

Hybrid Management Applied to AI Projects

Digital Transformation is far more than a technological issue. It can offer businesses a huge potential to create a new culture and mindset and develop products and services in a completely different way, boosting businesses to an unprecedented level. However, for this transformation, it is necessary to be supported by a business model that can easily adapt to market changes. Also, it is paramount to integrate business transformations and operations initiatives, allowing the creation of internal and external sustainable value ecosystems. In this context, the FLEKS Model is the right option for organizations aiming to change how they manage their businesses in scenarios where technology will assume an essential role in the following years. This presentation seeks to demonstrate how the FLEKS Model and Digital Transformation can work together to help any organization to change its business forever.

Harnessing the Power of AI Equitably, Responsibly, and Wisely

AI and machine learning have provided organizations with numerous new opportunities. As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more widely used in industry, an ethical quandary emerges. Project managers are constantly under pressure to deliver results quickly. It is easy for project managers to become preoccupied with achieving their objectives. The issue arises when AI tools are used without considering their impact on society. Some pressing concerns: How can we create equitable value when integrating AI? How ethical are the project management processes? What are the ramifications? Who will be impacted by decisions, even if they seem small? How can we maximize benefits while minimizing the negative social impacts on those workers whose jobs will become increasingly reliant on AI? Incorporating AI without considering the societal implications may result in more negative than positive outcomes in the long run. We need to prioritize ethics, accountability, integrity, and wisdom in order to enjoy AI’s full benefits.

Project Management and AI – Are we taking the full, or at least some advantage yet?

This presentation will raise more questions than provide answers around the application of AI within the discipline of Project Management. Projects are the driving force of success in every organization today. As temporary management systems provide flexibility, projects are the means to achieve strategic objectives and secure competitive advantages. At the same time, projects have become challenging to manage because of the ever-changing environment in the so-called VUCA world. AI can offer significant advantages to project management discipline, yet only a fraction of companies take advantage of its full power. And here is the most critical question: Can we democratize AI in project management? and which project management themes should have the priority in terms of AI application?
